Rick and Morty Producers Map Out The Future Of The Series

This story contains spoilers for Rick and Morty – so make sure you’re up to date on the series before you read on. With the Season 6 premiere of Rick and Morty only a few days away, the creative minds behind Adult Swim’s award-winning animated series have confirmed that the upcoming season will serve as “the second half of a larger story.”

Speaking to Inverse, showrunner Scott Marder and producer James Siciliano revealed details on how the sixth season would shake things up. Following the game-changing cliffhanger to the Season 5 finale and the questions it asks, Marder said it “left us with a ton of homework and a lot to live up to. I feel like it closes that book, but at the same time, opens up a new one. There was a clear and present danger that was always there that so naturally emerged coinciding with Evil Morty to begin the second half of a larger story.”

As the series enters a new chapter, a proposed larger story would suggest an expansion in scope and ambition since the Season 5 finale left questions concerning Rick’s future. As we know, Evil Morty escaped to a universe unaffected by Rick Sanchez’s genius. On top of scope and ambition, the team also promised “a season of the show every year” going forward, suggesting a newfound consistency in their storytelling.

Siciliano later confirmed that production on Season 7 was well underway – which lines up with a previous statement made by staff writer Cody Ziglar that the seventh season had wrapped. “We have the writers’ room for Season 8 going. So that’s about 20 episodes in some form of production, and the new season that we’re breaking.”

Rick and Morty Season 6 premieres on Adult Swim on Sunday, September 4 at 11 p.m ET/PT. Created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty stars Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, and Kari Wahlgren.
