Avatar: Seven Havens Teases Return Of Series’ Most Powerful Villain

Earlier today, Paramount Plus and Avatar Studios unveiled the long-awaited teaser trailer for Avatar: Seven Havens, the sequel series to Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The new show follows Avatar Pavi and is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a mysterious calamity event involving Korra killed off most of the world’s population and destroyed the nations’ boundaries, leaving seven safe cities around the map separated by a spirit wasteland. She meets her long lost twin,  Nisha, who may also have some Avatar powers, and together they must unravel the mystery of who they are and how the world was destroyed.

Eagle-eyed fans may have caught that the last few seconds of the trailer were a tease for the return of the Avatar world’s most powerful villain: Vaatu. You’d be forgiven if you’ve forgotten about Vaatu, as The Legend of Korra ended nearly 12 years ago. Time to brush up on your Avatar lore! 10,000 years before the events of The Legend of Korra, the first Avatar, Wan, impulsively acted and accidentally let loose the great spirit of darkness, Vaatu. He had been kept reigned in by the great spirit of light, Raava, but upon being loosed sets out to cover the world in 10,000 years of darkness. Working together, Wan and Raava fuse to become the first Avatar, a being that is half-human, half-spirit, and defeat Vaatu until their fated battle 10 centuries later.

The black and red square designs in the teaser trailer are immediately reminiscent of Vaatu’s eye, and with the completely revamped art style of Seven Havens it’s pretty easy to see what this is meant to tease. At the end of Book 2 of The Legend of Korra, Vaatu was destroyed for theoretically 10,000 more years. However, before that happened, he merged briefly with Raava. We are now in the realm of pure speculation, but this could be the reason that Avatar Pavi’s twin sister Nisha is also experiencing Avatar powers. Could Vaatu have been reborn in her, hiding in Korra for her entire life, and reincarnating in Nisha? It’s hard to say, but a story about two Avatars fighting to become the true one, especially two sisters, has a lot of potential.

Fans can expect the first episode of Avatar: Seven Havens to drop October 9 exclusively on Paramount Plus. The rest of the episodes will be rolled out on a schedule which has not been revealed yet.
